Challenging the confines of the band's prior sound, yet likewise coincidentally sticking close to the their initial statements of pushing the boundaries of extreme music, THE FUNERAL PYRE- in their two years since recording The Nature of Betrayal- has ditched keyboards along with much of the melodic death metal influence that initially inspired the band. Gone might be the death metal, but the melodious remains, albeit in a more black metal-inspired convention. With the band's latest offering, Wounds, along with the addition of a second guitar player, THE FUNERAL PYRE's riffs, fills, and - admittedly - solos have pushed the band's contemporaries' bound of banality.
With such an extreme sound, THE FUNERAL PYRE could do nothing but recruit some of the heaviest hitters in the extreme music underground. Calling upon John Haddad (Intronaut, Abysmal Dawn, Eyes Of Fire) to record the nine tracks that make up Wounds, THE FUNERAL PYRE chose to enlist the masterful mixing prowess of metal legend Erik Rutan (Cannibal Corpse, Vital Remains, Hate Eternal) and mastering heavyweight Alan Douches (Mastodon, Converge, Shadows Fall), resulting in the band’s best sounding and most experimental album yet.
Forming in Southern California in 2001, THE FUNERAL PYRE has already cut its teeth and amassed an underground following through a string of self-booked national and West Coast tours with the likes of Book of Black Earth, As Eden Burns, Cerberus and labelmates Light This City and Antagonist. In the bands formative years, THE FUNERAL PYRE as also shared the stage with Trivium, 3 Inches of Blood, Suffocation and Vader among others.
With a string of demos and independent releases prior to hooking up with Bay Area indie metal label Creator Destructor Records in 2006, The Nature of Betrayal, which led to the 2007 worldwide re-release through a distribution with Prosthetic Records. Now, 2008 brings THE FUNERAL PYRE’s first full-blown worldwide release through Prosthetic with Wounds, the band’s most ambitious outing to date.
